Cupitt, Don

Cupitt, Don
(b. 1934)
   Theologian.
Cupitt was educated at the University of Cambridge and for most of his career served as Dean of Emmanuel College. He is the author of many books including Taking Leave of God (1980), The Long-Legged Fly (1987) and The Time Being (1992). He is associated with a non-realist vision of Christianity, arguing that human beings create their own meanings and values and that the Christian faith is not meant to be understood literally; it merely provides a framework through which its adherents come to terms with their own experiences. His ideas are discussed and promulgated in the ‘Sea of Faith’ group which meets regularly to discuss the consequences of interpreting religion in non-realist categories.
